Viognier
Viognier is an ancient grape believed to have originated in Dalmatia (part of modern day Croatia) and brought to the Rhône region by the Romans.
It almost became extinct in France due to the introduction of the phylloxera pest, brought in from America in the 1800's, however it managed to survive and has made a come back over the last thirty years.
Since the 1990's the variety has been planted extensively throughout the world, particularly in Australia and California. A few years ago, the Argentine viticultural industry started cultivating this variety and producing wines with it. It can be produced in stainless steel containers or fermented and aged in oak barrels.
It has an unmistakable caramel flavour, also floral and tropical fruit scents can be noticed in the fresh wines. When oak is used, this variety gives forth (after a few years) almond like bouquets.
Tip: Pairs well with fish, seafood and poultry dishes
