Torrontés

Torrontés is a very popular variety in Argentina but remains relatively unknown in the U.K.. This may be quickly changing as its reputation for producing excellent and interesting white wines starts to spread.

Torrontés vines were first planted during the Spanish conquest and it is the only grape variety considered to be indigenously Argentinian. It is grown in all wine-producing regions, from Salta to Rio Negro. Its origin is still debated among specialists, although it is an established fact that the grape variety is closely related to the Mediterranean Moscatels.

Evidence of this relation is its unmistakable bouquet normally associated with flowers like rose, jasmine and geranium, with the occasional appearance of spicy fragrances.

Recently, this grape has been used in the production of sweet and sparkling wines, with excellent results in both cases.

It is an excellent companion for the typical dishes from Argentina’s Northwest Region, especially the empanadas of Salta and Tucumán, as well as the traditional locro.

Tip: A good match with spicy, well seasoned food such as Korean, Thai, Indian, Chinese and Vietnamese dishes
