Sangiovese
Sangiovese is a red grape variety originating in Italy. It is most famous as the main component of the Chianti blend in Tuscany, however winemakers outside Italy are starting to experiment with it.
For example in Argentina, this variety has been cultivated and used in wine production for decades, but its potential for producing quality wines was discovered only in the last few years. In its youth, it exhibits raspberry and violet bouquets, after evolving in oak, and in the bottle it gets a nuance associated with raisins, reminiscent of the peninsular Chianti.
In Australia experimentations have taken place with the grape and it is increasing in popularity amongst growers.
This varietal has fresh fruity flavours of strawberry and a little spiciness, but it readily takes on oak and even tar-like flavours when barrel-aged.
Tip: Pair up with a delicate sauced beef dish or with Italian hard cheeses and even Provolone if you can find it. Apparently also matches well with a nice cut of liver and some fava beans!
